How to Get from León to Peñas Blancas (Costa Rica Border): The Ultimate 2026 Guide

So, you’ve made the choice to do an epic one-day mission from León to the Costa Rica border. Respect.

Whether you’re crossing into Costa Rica the same day, or just getting as far as Peñas Blancas and figuring out the rest later, you’ve got three realistic options: a shared shuttle, a public bus, or a private transfer.

The shared shuttle is the easiest “set it and forget it” option. The bus route is cheaper (and more of a story), but it comes with the classic Nicaragua combo: a Managua terminal switch, border paperwork, and a bit of walking.

In simple terms, the route is: León ➡️ Managua ➡️ Peñas Blancas. The one part that catches people out is Managua—to head south, you’ll usually need to switch across the city to Mercado Roberto Huembes, which is the main southbound bus hub.
