This is the “door-to-door” style option from León, with drop-off exactly where you need to start the border process on the Nicaragua side.

Pickup: 8:45 AM – 9:00 AM from your accommodation in León.
Travel time: Typically 6–7 hours.
Price: $35. - As of June 2026, some shuttle companies need a minimum of two tickets booked for this route (does not apply to other routes).
Drop-off: Directly at the outer migration building/small market area. This is where people fill in the migration form.
Then what?: You’ll walk to the border and go through the customs area on foot.

Check availability at your hotel reception. Nearly every shuttle company will pick you up outside your accommodation.

Option 2: The Public Bus (The Budget Route)

Yes, the bus route is doable, and it’s cheaper, but you’ll want to start early and keep the day moving.

Step 0: Start Early (Seriously)

To be safe, aim to be at the León terminal by 7:30 AM.

Why? The border area gets quiet later in the day, and it is almost closed by around 6:00 PM. On the Costa Rica side, the last local bus leaves around 6:30–7:00 PM. (Note: The actual Peñas Blancas border typically operates from 6 AM to 10 PM Monday to Saturday, but closes earlier at 8 PM on Sundays). If you arrive late and things slow down, you can get stuck in limbo.

At the last stop on this line is the bus depot area around 100 meters walk from the main migration building. There is a small market here and an ironically random off-duty shop. People won’t harass you here but will try and sell you things, I suggest finding a quick snack on any of the stores as it’s normally anywhere from 2 - 5 hours to get all the way through Nicaraguan and Costa Rican customs.
