How to Get from Granada to San Juan del Sur: Bus, Shuttle or Private Transfer?

Information checked: September 2026

Getting from Granada to San Juan del Sur is fairly straightforward. The main choice is whether you want to do it as cheaply as possible by local bus, pay a little more for a direct shared shuttle, or arrange a private transfer.

If you are travelling by public transport, the route is:

Granada → Rivas → San Juan del Sur

There is no complicated Managua connection. You take a bus from Granada to Rivas, change in the same terminal area, and then continue south to San Juan del Sur.

The public buses are the cheapest option, but unless you particularly want the experience of travelling by chicken bus, or you plan to stop in Rivas, we think the direct shared shuttle is the best option for most travellers.

At US$18 per person, the price difference is not enormous, and you avoid the bus change, luggage handling and the slightly tiring arrival experience at Rivas terminal.

Granada to San Juan del Sur at a glance

Public transport requires a change in Rivas, while the shared shuttle travels directly from Granada to San Juan del Sur.

Times for public buses are approximate. The buses do not always work to the kind of rigid timetable you may be used to elsewhere, and waiting time in Rivas can change the overall journey considerably.

Option 1: Taking the public bus from Granada to San Juan del Sur

If you are comfortable using Nicaragua's local bus system, this journey is not particularly difficult.

You need to make one change in Rivas.

Step 1: Granada to Rivas

Buses for Rivas leave from the Terminal de Maxi Palí in Granada.

Open Terminal de Maxi Palí in Google Maps

If you are unsure when you arrive, ask:

¿Dónde está el bus para Rivas?

The Granada–Rivas bus normally costs around C$50–80 per person.

We would treat that as a working range rather than expecting one exact fare every time. Your luggage can affect what you pay, particularly if a larger backpack or suitcase has to be stored separately.

Allow roughly two hours for this part of the journey, although traffic, passenger stops and the type of bus can change that.

Larger bags will normally either go on the roof or be stored in whatever luggage space is available. This is normal on Nicaraguan buses, but it is worth keeping valuables, documents and electronics in a smaller bag with you.

Step 2: Changing buses in Rivas

The good news is that the San Juan del Sur bus leaves from the same general terminal area in Rivas where the Granada bus drops you.

You do not need to cross town or find another terminal.

The slightly less enjoyable part is what tends to happen when you step off the bus.

Rivas is a busy transport hub used by plenty of foreign travellers heading towards San Juan del Sur and Ometepe. That means taxi drivers and other people looking for passengers know exactly when buses arrive.

You may have several people approaching you almost immediately and offering a taxi.

Some will also tell you that the bus is leaving much later, is not running, or that taking their taxi is your only realistic option.

Our advice is simple: do not rush.

Politely decline and take a minute to work out where the San Juan del Sur bus is.

If you cannot identify it yourself, one of the easiest things to do is ask the driver or conductor of the bus that just brought you from Granada:

¿Dónde está el bus para San Juan del Sur?

You can also ask one of the stallholders or another bus worker inside the terminal.

The connection itself is normally much simpler than the first few minutes at Rivas can make it seem.

Step 3: Rivas to San Juan del Sur

The local bus from Rivas to San Juan del Sur costs roughly C$30–60 per person.

Again, we would use this as a range because fares and luggage charges can vary slightly.

The journey usually takes around 45–60 minutes.

Buses generally run regularly during the day, often with waits somewhere around 15–45 minutes, although you should not plan your journey around an exact departure frequency.

On Sundays, services can be less frequent.

If you arrive in Rivas and there is going to be a longer wait than you want, taking a taxi for the final section to San Juan del Sur is perfectly reasonable.

That is particularly useful if there are two or more of you and you can split the fare.

How much does the public bus cost in total?

As a sensible working budget, allow roughly C$50–80 for Granada → Rivas and C$30–60 for Rivas → San Juan del Sur.

So the full public-transport journey will normally cost somewhere around C$80–140 per person, before any additional luggage charge.

Bring córdobas and ideally smaller notes.

The public bus is genuinely cheap, so if your priority is simply spending as little as possible, it works well.

The question is whether the saving is worth the Rivas connection.

For some travellers, absolutely. For others, not really.

Who should take the public bus?

We would choose the bus if you are travelling on a tight budget, actively want the experience of using Nicaragua's local buses, are not in a hurry, are travelling reasonably light, or want to spend some time in Rivas before continuing to San Juan del Sur.

That last point is worth mentioning.

If you actually want to stop in Rivas for a day or two, then taking the Granada–Rivas bus makes perfect sense. You can stay there and continue to San Juan del Sur when you are ready.

If Rivas is purely an unwanted connection, the calculation is different.

Option 2: Shared shuttle from Granada to San Juan del Sur

For most travellers going directly from Granada to San Juan del Sur, this is the option we would choose.

Sunset Viaje's shared shuttle runs daily from central Granada to central San Juan del Sur.

The current service costs US$18 per person.

You pay a US$3 deposit online when booking, with the remaining US$15 paid in cash at pickup.

Pickup is from your confirmed hotel, hostel or address in central Granada, normally between 12:30 and 1:00 PM.

Arrival in San Juan del Sur is generally around 4:00 PM, although this is an estimate rather than a guaranteed arrival time. Shared shuttles may make other passenger stops and traffic can vary.

The shuttle normally uses a Toyota Hiace or similar vehicle.

Standard luggage is fine. If you have a surfboard, several large bags or anything oversized, mention it when booking so we can make sure there is suitable space.

Why we usually recommend the shuttle

This is one of those routes where the price difference between public transport and the shuttle is relatively small.

The bus is cheaper.

But with the shuttle, you avoid getting yourself to the Granada bus terminal, changing vehicles in Rivas, dealing with luggage twice, waiting for the second bus, and working out which taxi offers at Rivas are genuine or necessary.

You are picked up in central Granada and taken directly to central San Juan del Sur.

For US$18, we think that is good value for most travellers.

Where does the shuttle drop you in San Juan del Sur?

The shared shuttle drops passengers at hotels, hostels and addresses in central San Juan del Sur.

It does not provide direct drop-off to the beaches outside town.

That includes places such as Playa Maderas, Playa Remanso and other accommodation outside the central San Juan del Sur area.

If you are staying at one of those beaches, travel into San Juan del Sur first and then arrange a local taxi or transfer for the final part of the journey.

The same principle applies if you arrive by public bus.

Option 3: Private transfer from Granada to San Juan del Sur

A private transfer costs more but gives you complete control over the journey.

You choose the departure time, travel directly from your accommodation in Granada, and can usually be taken directly to your final hotel or villa rather than only into central San Juan del Sur.

We would consider a private transfer particularly worthwhile if you are a family, a group of three or more people, travelling with several suitcases, carrying surfboards or other bulky equipment, staying outside central San Juan del Sur, arriving or leaving at an awkward time, or simply prefer not to share the vehicle.

It can also become better value than it first appears once several passengers are splitting the total cost.

Private transfers in Nicaragua

Bus or shuttle: which would we choose?

For this particular journey, we would normally take the shared shuttle.

Not because the public bus is especially difficult. It isn't.

The Granada–Rivas leg is straightforward, and once you know how Rivas terminal works, the second bus is easy enough to find.

The reason is simply value.

If the shuttle cost US$40 or US$50 per person, then the bus would be much more attractive.

At US$18, we think most travellers are better off paying a little more and going directly from Granada to San Juan del Sur.

We would still take the bus if travelling on a very tight budget, if we wanted the local experience, or if we were planning to stop in Rivas anyway.

What about travelling on Sunday?

You can still make the journey on Sunday, but we would allow a bit more flexibility.

The Granada–Rivas route continues to operate, but there may be fewer services than during the week, and the Rivas–San Juan del Sur connection can also be less frequent.

If you are travelling by public transport, leave earlier rather than planning around the final possible connection.

And if you arrive in Rivas and the wait for San Juan del Sur is inconvenient, taking a taxi for the last leg is a perfectly sensible fallback.

If you do not want to think about Sunday bus frequencies at all, the shared shuttle runs daily.

What happens with luggage on the public buses?

Travelling with luggage is normal.

Smaller bags can usually stay with you.

Larger backpacks and suitcases may go on the roof, in a luggage compartment if the vehicle has one, or wherever the conductor finds room.

You may occasionally be asked to pay a little more for a large bag.

Keep your passport, money, phone, camera and other valuables in a smaller bag that stays with you rather than inside luggage being stored elsewhere.

If you are travelling with a surfboard or several large cases, we would probably skip the local bus and use the shuttle or a private transfer instead.

Arriving in San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur itself is compact, and if you are staying in the centre you can usually reach your hotel or hostel easily after arriving.

The main thing to check before travelling is whether your accommodation is actually in San Juan del Sur town.

Properties advertised as being in the San Juan del Sur area can sometimes be at beaches well outside the centre.

If you are staying at Maderas, Remanso or another nearby beach, expect to arrange another taxi or transfer from town.

Do not assume that a booking described as “San Juan del Sur” is necessarily within walking distance of the centre.

It is direct, inexpensive and removes the only slightly awkward part of the public journey: changing buses in Rivas.

If you are travelling on the lowest possible budget, want the chicken-bus experience or plan to spend time in Rivas, the public bus is still a perfectly good option.

And if you are travelling with family, surf equipment, lots of luggage or simply want to set your own departure time, a private transfer gives you the most flexibility.
